The Secret Country
By Pamela Dean

They thought it was a game, but it was its own world.

Each vacation for the past nine years, cousins Patrick, Ruth, Ellen, Ted and Laura have played at a game they call the “Secret” – an invented, scripted world full of witches, unicorns, a magic ring, court intrigue, and the Dragon King. In the Secret, they can imagine anything into reality, and shape destiny. Then the unbelievable happens: by trick or by chance, they actually find themselves in the Secret Country, their made-up identities now real. The five have arrived at the start of their game, with the Country on the edge of war. What was once exciting and wonderful now looms threateningly before them, and no one is sure how to stop it… or if they will ever get back home.

Cool, huh? The story that is. It reminded me of Enca when I first read the synopsis. Children inventing a world of their own, much like T.O.L. But of course, it’s all very different. The book was actually my Ate’s grad gift to me. My Ate had a grad gift, only she did.

I officially proclaim bowling nights as sunderers of friendships. Can you believe that we had to leave the graduation early because Dad was running late for his bowling game?

Bowling night + Grumpy old man = Early departure
You can imagine me walking off to Gate 8 while hearing the rest of my batch cheer each other’s names while taking pictures. Dad even suggested we commute home while he went off to his game. Astard. We went with him anyway. Home, picked up my cousin, and went to CPK. Dad wasn’t with us so we commuted to ATC as well. I just can’t believe that my high school life ended just like that. “We have to go home. Now.” “Okay, bye my friends for thirteen years. My father awaits me.” As simple as that. How vexing.

I’ve spent the last two days studying for APE. Hope I pass all of them. Or else Mom’s absences will be a waste.

Unfortunately, RJ your evident means of putting down people with your philosophy is futile. I'm studying because it's practical to pass those subjects. One unit is currrently P1000. However, it takes a mere P800 to be given a chance to skip 6 units. It IS a bargain. And good economists do not pass up a good bargain. BTW, it also saves time and money, if you read the letter.
