more books than TV
Apr. 20th, 2007 08:44 pmThe heat is bearable. I spent the whole afternoon weeding the garden with an umbrella high above my head. I realized that when you really set out to do something, though all of your surroundings are saying do it later, you can really ignore all other outside influences and get to work. It felt really fulfilling as I stared down and swept off the weeds I've tugged out of our plant pots.
Before wedding our garden, Mom ordered me to do the laundry. Everyone's laundry. You're talking pounds of putrid-smelling textile being shoved into a big, blue washing machine that I myself can fit in. I sometimes call it the perfect hiding place. Mom actually didn't order me, she bribed me. She said that she'll buy me a book if I laundered so I fervently did. It has been one day now, and I still am not flipping through a new book. I know I'm impatient to give only a one day allowance. But I'm desperate. I have to read or else I'll die of boredoom. Tending to the garden is already out of my things-to-do-when-you're-bored list. I hope I can do some other useless chore in this house. Otherwise, Mom can buy me a new book.
