First days
Jun. 22nd, 2007 04:56 pmWHAT A WEEK!!! I am uber tired from the seven days being away from home. Now I just got back from Elbi and my mom misses me so.
I guess I would be the last person in the lj-community that would post an entry about my first day of school. You see, my ACTUAL first day of school was June 20. June 18, the official first day, was just full of crap orientations and invitations to orgs and stuff. The next day was a holiday here in Laguna.
Class: ECON 10
Set: 8:30, CEM 103
Not much of my teachers left an impression on me. The reason why this teacher left such a mark is because of his first name, AGHAM. I wanted to ask him why he pursued Economics when his name was Science but the class wasn't warmed yet to raise such a question. "There will be three tests every term, and all of them will be essay type." Kamusta ka naman. The other thing that's so lovely about UP is the liberalism. That class was supposed to be from 8:30 to 10:00, but oh so Mr. Science said he had a meeting that started at 8:30 a while ago. So he dismissed us an hour before the time. And I used that to find where the hell my next class is.
Class: MATH 17
Set: 10:00, MB 103
My Ate said that people hold celebrations when they pass this course, so I was really curious on what it was all about. College Algebra and Trigonometry. It wasn't that bad, we've discussed those before, until she started muttering gibberish when she went through the Course Guide. Ma'am Esteban is a teacher that's "pala-sigaw". Not pala-sigaw in the sense that she gets mad easily, but in a way that it so obvious that she is trying hard to raise her voice so she could be heard from the back of the room. When I got to the Math Building Room 103, I was fresh from kilometers of walking (The CEM and MB are at UPLB's opposite sides.) so when I got to Rm. 103 I just entered the damn door. I was greeted by a room full of people all looking at me. God, am I late, I thought. But then I noticed my watch and realized that I came in a good 10 minutes early. This was the class before mine. I made an apology and waited outside. We are only 39 students in MATH17-CU2. It helps since we can remember each other's faces and names. It doesn't help that I'm the only ECON student and that the place is drowning with CE's, EE's and IE's. Mayroon din namang nag-iisang BS Stat.
Class: Math 2
Set: 11:30, CEM FH
One hundred and sixty students. One hundred and sixty new classmates. Ang saya. The CEM Function Hall was designed to hold social events involved with the College of Economics and Management. If there are no such events, it is used to hold large classes such as mine. 160 is a big number. Fortunately, Sir Cuaresma assured us that the 300% tuition increase will be efficiently used to aircondition the rooms. He's really funny, Sir Gene Cuevas (another guy with a name of science). He refers to his class as a "math appreciation class" and is designed to remove the negative outlook of students in Mathematics.
Class: ENG 1
Set: 8:30, CAS 7
I don't remember much of this session. As I said, most of the teachers don't leave an imperssion. Ma'am Janette did mention that the slightest ring of a cellphone will automatically result to a 50 item quiz, whether she discussed or not. I do remember meeting a girl named Iza who sat beside me. Like all UP teachers, Ma'am Janette dismissed us a good hour early so I helped Iza find the PhySci building and look where she can buy a labgown. I don't know how it started. She just walked up beside me and asked me what I would do for the next hour. I learned that she's an only child from Nueva Viscaya, and her village can fit inside the whole campus. I didn't get her number though.
Class: PE-SDF
Set: 11:00, PC
It was raining, and I walked all the way to Baker Hall just for a one-hour class. I'd never explored Baker Hall so I didn't know what the hell PC meant in my sked. I was lost for 5 minutes (Curse rooms with no labels.) until I decided to approach this nice looking Pilates Instructor. My Self-Defense instructor is a huge guy that can be compared to Sir Del. He told us that the difference between SD and Aikido is that Aikido is basically grappling and grabbing. Self-defense involves hitting, kicking and slapping in a way that disarms a pursuer. Trivia: Kicking an attacker in the groin will not make him growl in pain. It will hurt for only a split-second, then he'll really kill you. It's a bit insecure since he told us that our Final Exam would be to hold a one-on-one match with the Taekwondo Class. Curses talaga. The other curse-worthy thing is that we have to wear Taekwondo uniforms. Now, I'm on the look-out for anyone with a Taekwondo uniform that'll fit my small frame. P.S. If we can't borrow or order our unform, we'll have to do those things that COCC's do. You know, push-ups then suddenly standing up.
Class: MATH 1
Set: 1:00, MBLH
Like MATH2, MATH1 is a large class, with Ma'am Loyola as the teacher. I remembered her since she claims that it is disadvantageous to marry an Australian, have kids with him and divorce. When you stand next to your children at the park, people will ask you, "Miss, foreynjer ang amo mo, no?" I'm looking forward to this class since its Course Title is Quantitative Reasoning.
Class: BLK ECON X4 MTG
Set: 3:00, SU rm.9
There are 39 people in our block which is a big number compared to BLK ECON X3's four members. I can't say much of my group, besides the fact that there's this six-footer girl, that English-speaking boy and our facilitators from FoodTech. We don't have a BlockRep yet but I have a feeling that my block will get closer after every meeting.
I currently reside at the Butterfly Inn, a few yards away from the CEM building. There are 8 New Freshmen in my dorm, one of which is my roommate (Rose) who is distinguishable by her Alyssa Alano looks.
Rose - my room mate and also a BS ECON student. Unfortunately, we're not blockmates. She has a fetish for pink, proven when the prof asked the class what color would they want their quiz ntbk to be. She was the only one who vied gor pink.
Maryvein - An otaku for shojou anime. Likes Gakuen Alice but is extremely addicted to Strawberry Panic (It's a yuri, she tells me.) When I first talked to her, she thought I wasn't a freshman. She's also a fan of PBB. You might think that she's a tv addict, but her enunciation of words and opinionated speeches trashes that notion. Later, I found in her laptop a copy of her valedictory address.
Steffie - She has a BLEACH cellphone strap like I do. Also an anime fan. Likes BLEACH and Alice Academy as far as I know.
Elaine - my seatmate in MATH17 and a CE student. She dreams of entering the UPCES organization even though she's still not allowed as a freshman. Once a basketball captain and always blaming herself for being tamad. She often asks Tami-nee to buy her kimono, sake and a round trip ticket to Japan. She keeps telling herself "Watashi wa kireii."
Tamiko Yamamoto - The Japanese resident. A dual citizen of Jap and Phil. Hers is the only room that's air-conditioned, one of the reasons why we befriend her. Maryvein, a sucker for all things Japanese, keeps asking her questions about their culture and tradition. She's 24 by the way, and is a VetMed student.
Anne and Jen - my MATH1 classmates. Jen is tall and fair with the expression "Kamusta ka naman" which she gladly passed on to me. Anne is always on her phone, checking out on her boyfriend. She gets extremely hyper when we tease her.
Kim - Kim reminds me of Bea of PBB. Maybe because they look alike. I don't know much about her besides the fact that the light is on all night in hers and Jen's room.
